Robin de Sherwood

Hace años, muchos, daban algunas series interesantes en el canal autonomico de donde vivia. Y una de aquellas series era Robin de Sherwood, serie que me mantenia enganchado a la pantalla, alla por finales de los 80, y muy diferente a todos los Robin que he visto desde entonces. Esta serie, creada en 1984 por Richard Carpenter, constaba de tres temporadas, siendo la mas larga la ultima, con 13 episodios; y la excelente banda sonora fue compuesta por Clannad.

La historia nos narra lo que indudablemente todos conocemos: la lucha contra los Normandos -principalmente contra la tirania del Sheriff de Nottingham, que intentaba hacerse con el trono de inglaterra, aprovechando que el monarca Ricardo Corazon de Leon estaba luchando en el extranjero- y la defensa de las antiguas tradiciones por parte de Robin de Loxley, o Robin Hood, y sus peculiares compañeros, entre los que se incluye un ¿¿sarraceno?? ¡Oo! (que conste que Hollywood debio de tomar nota de este detalle). Y todo eso haciendo malabarismos con el escaso presupuesto disponible, intentando recrear la ambientacion de la epoca medieval de la forma mas realista posible, pero añadiendo tambien tintes misticos, magicos y sobrenaturales a la misma, muchos de ellos de tipo celta. Sinceramente, creo que para los medios disponibles entonces, hicieron una pequeña obra maestra.

Se que en otras cadenas autonomicas tambien emitieron esta serie, y seria una lastima que dejaseis pasar la oportunidad de visionarla... asi que, aunque sea en VO, intentar disfrutarla.

Robin of Sherwood Complete Series 1 The 1984 incarnation of Robin of Sherwood had a crucial ingredient that the traditional tale previously lacked: magic. Creator Richard Carpenter combined his knowledge of Medieval England with a rich store of Arthurian-style folklore to create a world where wizards and witches rub shoulders with Norman knights and Anglo-Saxon peasants. Michael Praed's enthusiastic performance in the lead is matched by the sheer energy of all involved. There may be pauses for a spiritual tête á tête with forest demi-god Herne the Hunter, but swordplay and archery are never far behind. Wrapped in the forest's gorgeous greens and pools of shadow the show maintained a perfectly believable look, supported by what should have been (but wasn't) glaringly anachronistic music from Clannad. Best of all, however, is the crackling dialogue that still makes for compelling (and magical) viewing, especially when it comes from guest actors such as John Rhys-Davies as King Richard.

Robin of Sherwood Complete Series 2 The second series of Robin of Sherwood sets up both a sense of melancholy for the impending departure of Michael Praed and excitement for his imminent replacement by Jason Connery. These seven episodes are the very best of Praed and co, building upon their established camaraderie and making forest-frolicking seem like TV's best ever gig. "The Prophecy" has a running thread of back plot that will explain Praed's Doctor Who-like transformation to Connery (and all so he could cameo in Dynasty). Mystical Herne predicts the death of a great king, but the merry men are more interested in the introduction of new semi-regular Prince John (Philip Davis). The series becomes braver as it continues by delving deeper into the black arts and exploring such matters as anti-Semitism and pagan beliefs. Gisburne's schemes to capture the bandits grow more desperate, while Herne's advice grows more cryptic and Marion's love for Robin grows stronger. All of which builds to the excellent two-part "The Swords of Wayland" and its coda "The Greatest Enemy". Now prepare yourself for something completely different.

Robin of Sherwood Complete Series 3, Part 1 Episodes 1 to 6 from the third series of the popular TV show based on the legendary outlaw. In 'Herne's Son (Parts 1 and 2)' the Merry Men have disbanded following the death of the original Robin of Loxley; however, when he learns that Marion has been abducted by Lord Owen of Clun, young Robert of Huntingdon (Jason Connery) dons the late Robin's trademark hood and, with the encouragement of Herne the Hunter, sets about regrouping Robin's band. 'The Power of Albion' sees Robert call upon Marion's medical skills when he is wounded during a raid. 'The Inheritance' has young Isadora ask Robert for his help when she and her father Agrivaine, guardians of a priceless treasure, fall prey to a pair of pillagers. 'The Sheriff of Nottingham' finds the Sheriff's position filled by Philip Mark (Lewis Collins), the infamous Butcher of Lincoln, who immediately sets about capturing Robin and his men. Finally, in 'The Cross of St Ciricus', Robert discovers a hidden connection between himself and the victim of a recent robbery.

Robin of Sherwood Complete Series 3, Part 2 Episodes 7 to 13 from the third series of the popular TV show based on the legendary outlaw. In 'Cromm Cruac' Much falls seriously ill after being caught in a forester's trap. The outlaws take him to the village of Cromm Cruac, unaware that the evil Gulner (Richard O'Brien) is not far away. 'The Betrayal' sees the King arriving in Nottingham to collect his taxes personally. With him he brings Roger de Carnac, who hatches a plan to catch Robin (Jason Connery) once and for all. 'Adam Bell' has the Sheriff bargain with the captured Much's life when his own nephew, Martin, is kidnapped by ageing outlaw Adam Bell. 'The Pretender' finds Robin wondering whether the young man he has just rescued from the Earl of Gloucester's soldiers is in fact Prince Arthur of Brittany, pretender to the throne of England. 'Rutterkin' sees Little John's planned elopement with Meg of Wickham frustrated by the mad pig lady. 'The Time of the Wolf (Parts 1 and 2)' has Robin attempt to help the villagers when King John orders them to surrender all their food to the army he is raising against the Welsh.
